Rashad
Hummatov

Computer Engineering graduate of ADA University, now taking a Master's in Internet of Things and Cyber-Physical Systems. I spend most of my time where data meets hardware — pipelines, sensors, and the messy work of getting a signal from one place to another intact.

Who I am

Rashad Hummatov
Vilnius, autumn 2024

I grew up in Baku and studied Computer Engineering at ADA University. What pulled me in was not any one language or framework — it was the moment a system stops being a diagram and starts actually moving something.

That interest split in two directions and I have kept both. On one side, data engineering: ingestion, pipelines, storage formats, and the unglamorous work of making dozens of sources agree with each other. On the other, physical computing — sensors, microcontrollers, signals that come from the real world and arrive noisy.

In autumn 2024 I left for a semester at Vilnius University in Lithuania, and used the months around it to travel through nine countries. I photographed it and wrote it down as I went, city by city — that is the Erasmus journey.

Education

Where I studied

BSc · Computer Engineering

ADA University

Baku, Azerbaijan. Dean's List of Honor in Fall 2023 and Spring 2024.

2021 — 2026
MSc · IoT & Cyber-Physical Systems

Azerbaijan Technical University

Taught in English. Embedded systems, connected devices, and the software around them.

Current
Erasmus · Mathematics & Computer Science

Vilnius University

Lithuania. One semester abroad, and the base for the whole Erasmus journey.

Sep 2024 — Jan 2025

Experience

What I have worked on

Two roles and three projects. One of the projects is pure data infrastructure, one reads a human being through a sensor, and one exists to understand how the big-data machinery works underneath.

Data Engineering Intern

Large-scale data infrastructure and integrations: pulling marketing data in from external APIs, moving it through streaming and change-data-capture pipelines, and landing it in a lake where analysts could actually reach it.

  • Ingestion from the LinkedIn, Google Ads, Meta and TikTok APIs
  • Kafka and CDC-based pipelines for change propagation
  • Apache Spark for distributed processing
  • MinIO / S3 data lake, with Apache Iceberg and Parquet as table and file formats
  • Querying through Impala, Hive Metastore and Greenplum
  • Data masking and governance across dozens of databases
  • Dataiku and Jupyter for analysis workflows

Things I have built

Data engineering

End-to-end ETL pipeline for live weather data

A full pipeline rather than a script: collection from a weather API, storage in PostgreSQL, orchestration in Airflow, transformations in dbt, and visualisation through Superset. Built to practise the shape of a real production stack — scheduling, retries, and models that rebuild cleanly — instead of moving data by hand.

Bluetooth force-sensing biofeedback for guided breathing

A FlexiForce sensor on an Arduino measures the pressure of breathing, sends it over Bluetooth, and a Python/PyQt6 interface turns the processed signal into live visual feedback the person can breathe along with. Most of the difficulty was in the signal processing — raw sensor output is noisy, and a breathing curve has to be smooth enough to follow without lagging behind the actual breath.

Big data

Hadoop MapReduce over large text datasets

Distributed word-count analysis across a corpus of more than 60,000 words, written against Hadoop MapReduce and HDFS. The point was not the word count — it was seeing how work actually gets split, shuffled and reduced across nodes, which makes everything built on top of it far less mysterious.

Nine countries, one semester

Vilnius was home. Everything else was a weekend, a night bus, a ferry across the Baltic. Pick a city on the map to read what I found there.
